Cinema, Body and Brain, Thought
Cinéma, corps et cerveau, pensée

1d
The cinema of the body: from attitudes to gest (Cassavetes, Godard and Rivette)

In Godard, the attitudes of body are the categories of the spirit itself, and the gest is the thread which goes from one category to another. Les carabiniers is the Gesture of war. [Deleuze Cinema 2, 1989: 187d]

Reasons for believing in this world (Dreyer, Rossellini, Godard, Garrel)

Les Carabiniers is not another film about war, to glorify or attack it. It films the categories of war, which is something quite different. Now, as Godard says, these can be specific things, armies of sea, earth and air, or 'specific ideas', occupation, countryside, resistance, or 'specific feelings', violence, rout, absence of passion, derision, disorder, surprise, void, or 'specific phenomena', noise, silence. [Deleuze Cinema 2, 1989: 180c]

[Specific feelings: surprise, disorder]

The Circuits of the Optical and Sound Image

And in Les carabiniers Godard makes each shot a description, so that, instead of organically describing an object, we are shown pure descriptions which are unmade at the same time as they are outlined. [Deleuze Cinema 2, 1989: 43bc]

[Footnote:]

2 Claude Ollier, himself a nouveau roman writer, says in relation to Carabiniers: Godard 'produces for each shot a very quick review of its descriptive and suggestive virtualities before concentrating on one of them, them [sic] abandoning it, as soon as it has been indicated, precisely as he constitutes the whole work through a succession of renewed approaches, and at the very moment he finds it undoes it, gives almost the impression of losing interest in it, if not of purposely destroying it' (Souvenirs écran, Cahiers du cinéma/Gallimard, p.129) [Note: Ollier's book was published in 1981. Deleuze Cinema 2, 1989: 279b]

The Intolerable and Clairvoyance
L'intolérable et la voyance

[A purely optical and sound situation ...] is a matter of something too powerful, or too unjust, but sometimes also too beautiful, and which henceforth outstrips our sensory-motor capacities. Stromboli: a beauty which is too great for us, like too strong a pain. It can be a limit-situation, the eruption of the volcano, but also the most banal, a plain factory, a wasteland. In Godard's Les carabiniers the girl militant recites a few revolutionary slogans, so many clichés; but she is so beautiful, of a beauty which is unbearable for her torturers who have to cover up her face with a handkerchief. And this handkerchief, lifted again by the breath and whisper ('Brothers, brothers, brothers . . .'), itself becomes unbearable for us the viewers. [Deleuze Cinema 2, 1989: 17-18]
