In Stanely Donen, the sensory-motor situation allows 'flat views' to show through, postcards or snapshots of landscapes, towns and silhouettes. It gives way to those purely optical and sound situations where colour takes on a fundamental value, and the action, itself flattened, is no longer distinguishable from a moving element of the coloured film set. So dance arises directly as the dreamlike power which gives depth and life to these flat views, which makes use of a whole space in the film set and beyond, which gives a world to the image, surrounds it with an atmosphere of world (Pyjama Picnic [sic: The Pajama Game], Singing in the Rain, not just the dance in the street but the Broadway finale). Chez Stanley Donen, la situation sensorimotrice laisse transparaître des « vues plates », cartes postales ou clichés de passages, villes, silhouettes. Elle laisse place à ces situations purement optiques et sonores, où la couleur prend une valeur fondamentale, et où l’action elle-même aplatie ne se distingue plus d’un élément mobile du décor coloré. Alors la danse surgit directement comme la puissance onirique qui donne profondeur et vie à ces vues plates, qui déploie tout un espace dans le décor et au-delà, qui donne a l’image un monde, l’entoure d’une atmosphère de monde (« Pique-nique en pyjama », « Chantons sous la pluie », non seulement la danse dans la rue, mais le final de Broadway).
