Monumental history thus naturally tends towards the universal, and finds its masterpiece in Intolerance, because the different periods do not simply follow one another, but alternate through an extraordinary rhythmic montage (Buster Keaton gives a comic version of it in Three Ages. The first is what David Robinson calls the 'trajectory gag', which brings into play a whole art of rapid montage: thus as early as in The Three Ages the hero (as ancient Roman) escapes from a dungeon, seizes a shield, runs up a staircase, grabs a lance, jumps on to a horse, and standing up leaps through a high window, pushes aside two pillars, bringing the ceiling down, carries off the girl, slides along the lance and jumps into a litter which is just being carried off. Or else the modern hero leaps from the top of one house to another, but falls, saving himself by grabbing hold of a canopy, tumbles down a pipe which comes loose, projecting him down two storeys into a fire station, where he slides down the pole to jump on to the back of the fire-engine, which is about to set off. Ce qui est unique chez Buster Keaton, c’est la manière ont il élève directement le burlesque à la grande forme. Il emploie cependant plusieurs procédés. Le premier, c’est ce que David Robinson appelle le « gag-trajectoire », qui mobilise tout un art du montage rapide : ainsi dès « Les trois âges », le héros en Romain s’échappe d’un cachot, attrape un bouclier, monte en courant un escalier, arrache une lance, saute sur un cheval, et, debout, bondit à travers une haute | fenêtre, écarte deux piliers, fait tomber le plafond, s’empare de la fille, se laisse glisser le long de la lance et saute dans une litière qu’on emmène au même moment. Ou bien le héros moderne saute du haut d’une maison à une autre, mais tombe, se rattrape à une marquise, dégringole une tuyau qui se décroche, qui le projette deux étages plus bas, dans un poste d’incendie où il glisse le long du poteau de descente, et saute à l’arrière de la voiture de pompiers qui sortait justement. Buster Keaton invente quelque chose d’extraordinaire qui, heu, qu’on a appelé le gag trajectoire, c’est-à-dire un plan séquence très long… où se poursuit en une trajectoire unique, des mouvements les plus divers… Par exemple, heu, il descend, je dis n’importe quoi, je ne me souviens plus très bien, il descend une colonne, heu, de pompier, là vous voyez, comme dans une caserne de pompiers, il tombe sur la voiture des pompiers qui partaient juste à ce moment là, la voiture va le faire culbuter, etc… [Gilles Deleuze. Or in Sherlock Junior where, without a montage, in a single shot, Keaton gets on to the roof of the train through a trap door, leaps from one carriage to the next, grabs the cord of a water tank that we saw at the start, is carried down on to the track by the torrent of water which he unleashes, and runs off into the distance, while two men arrive on the scene and get drenched. Or, yet again, the trajectory gag is achieved by a change of shot, the actor remaining immobile: thus the famous dream-sequence in Sherlock Junior, where cutting gives us successively the garden, the street, the precipice, the sand-dune, the reef washed by the sea, the snowy plain, and finally the garden once again (likewise the passage through a change of scenery into a stationary car). Ou bien, sans montage, en un seul plan de « Sherlock Junior », Keaton passe par une trappe sur le toit du train, saute d’un wagon à l’autre, attrape la chaîne d’un réservoir d’eau qu’on aperçoit dès le début, est entraîné sur la voie par le torrent d’eau qu’il déclenche, et s’enfuit au loin, tandis que deux hommes arrivent et se font inonder. Ou bien encore le gag-trajectoire est obtenu par changement de plan, l’acteur restant immobile : ainsi dans la séquence célèbre du rêve de « Sherlock Junior », où les coupures font se succéder le jardin, la rue, le précipice, la dune de sable, le récif battu par la mer, l’étendue neigeuse, et redonnent enfin le jardin (de même le trajet par changement de décor en voiture immobile). American cinema grasped this state of the dream-image at least once, in the conditions of Buster Keaton’s burlesque, due to its natural affinity with surrealism, or rather with Dadaism. In the dream in Sherlock Junior, the image of the unbalanced chair in the garden gives way to the somersault in the street, then to the precipice at the edge of which the hero leans, but in the jaws of a lion, then to the desert and the cactus on which he sits down, then to the little hill which gives birth to an island battered by the waves, where he dives into an already snowy expanse, from which he emerges to find himself back in the garden. Si le cinéma américain a saisi au moins une fois ce statut de l’image-rêve, ce fut dans les conditions du burlesque de Buster Keaton, en vertu de son affinité naturelle avec le surréalisme, ou plutôt le dadaïsme. Dans le rêve de « Sherlock Junior », l’image de la chaise déséquilibrée dans le jardin fait place à la culbute dans la rue, puis au précipice au bord duquel le héros se penche, mais dans la gueule d’un lion, puis au désert et au cactus sur lequel il s’assied, puis à la petite colline qui donne naissance à une île battue par les flots, où il plonge dans une étendue déjà devenue neigeuse, d’où il sort pour se retrouver dans le jardin. Dream-images in turn seem to have two poles, which may be distinguished according to their technical production. One proceeds by rich and overloaded means – dissolves, superimpositions, deframings, complex camera movements, special effects, manipulations in the laboratory – going right to the abstract, in the direction of abstraction. The other, on the contrary, is very restrained, working by clear cuts or montage-cut, making progress simply through a perpetual unhinging which ‘looks like’ dream, but between objects that remain concrete. The techniques of the image always refer to a metaphysics of the imagination: it is like two ways of imagining the passage from one image to the other. In this respect dreamlike states are, in relation to the real, a bit like the ‘anomalous’ states of a language system in relation to the current language: sometimes addition, complication, over-saturation, sometimes, in contrast, elimination, ellipse, break, cut, unhinging. If this second pole appears clearly in Keaton’s Sherlock Junior, the first is the driving force of the great dream in Murnau’s The Last Man, where the uncontrollable batterers at the door are dissolved and superimposed, and tend towards infinitely restless abstract angles. Les images-rêve à leur tour semblent bien avoir deux pôles, qu’on peut distinguer d’après leur production technique. L’un procède par des moyens riches et surchargés, fondus, surimpressions, décadrages, mouvements complexes d’appareil, effets spéciaux, manipulations de laboratoire, allant jusqu’à l’abstrait, tendant à l’abstraction. L’autre au contraire, est très sobre, opérant par franches coupures ou montage-cut, procédant seulement à un perpétuel décrochage qui « fait »rêve, mais entre objets demeurant concrets. La technique de l’image renvoie toujours à une métaphysique de l’imagination : c’est comme deux manières de concevoir le passage d’une image à l’autre. A cet égard, les états oniriques sont par rapport au réel un peu comme les états « anomaux » d’une langue par rapport à la langue courante : tantôt surcharge, complexification, sursaturation, tantôt au contraire élimination, ellipse, rupture, coupure, décrochage. Si ce second pôle apparaît nettement dans le « Sherlock Junior » de Keaton, le premier anime le grand rêve du « Dernier des hommes » de Murnau, où les battants de porte démesurés se fondent, se superposent et tendent vers des angles abstraits infiniment agités. Buster Keaton, who is sometimes presented as a genius without reflection, is perhaps the first along with Vertov to have introduced the film within the film. In Sherlock Junior, this is in the form of a mirror-image; on another occasion, in The Cameraman, it is in the form of a seed which arrives directly via the cinema, even though manipulated by a monkey or a reporter, and constitutes the film in process of being made. Buster Keaton, qu’on présente parfois comme un génie sans réflexion, est peut-être le premier avec Vertov à avoir introduit le film dans le film. Et une fois, c’est dans « Sherlock junior », plutôt sous la forme d’une image en miroir ; une autre fois dans « Le cameraman », sous forme d’un germe qui passe par le cinéma direct, même manié par un singe ou par un reporter, et constitue le film en train de se faire. il va tomber sur un cheval, et il va y avoir, en un plan (plus fort) unique, c’qui était littéralement prodigieux pour l’époque, il y a un plan célèbre comme ça, où dans un long plan, dans un long plan séquence, heu, il arrive d’un train, il fait tomber la machine à eau, non il fait, il déclenche la machine à eau qui va noyer les bandits, enfin. Mais tout ça, le plan séquence c’est, y a, y a toute une variation de mouvements, pris dans une unité de trajectoire. Ça, c’est le grand, grand… du grand Buster Keaton. [Deleuze. Keaton's The Navigator, where the hero in the life-jacket, strangled, dying, drowning in his life-jacket, is going to be awkwardly saved by the girl. She takes him between her legs | to make sure of a grip and finally manages to open the jacket by cutting it whereupon a flood of water escapes from it. Never has an image rendered so well the violent metaphor of giving birth, by caesarian section and explosion of the amniotic sac. [Deleuze Cinema 2, 1989: 155-156]

« La croisière du Navigator », de Keaton, où le héros en scaphandre, asphyxié mourant, noyé dans son scaphandre, va être sauvé maladroitement par la jeune fille. Elle le prend entre ses jambes pour assurer sa prise, elle arrive enfin à ouvrir d’un coup de couteau le costume, d’où s’échappe un torrent d’eau. Jamais une image n’a aussi bien rendu la métaphore violente d’un accouchement, avec césarienne et explosion de la poche des eaux. [Deleuze Cinéma 2, 1985: 209c]

Et je citais d’autres exemples : Dans la grande séquence comique de La Croisière du navigator -la scène du scaphandrier, il y a des éléments burlesques mais il y a un long moment, lorsque les sauvages sont montés sur le bateau et qu’il y a un sauvage qui coupe le tuyau de respiration, il y a une espèce d’asphyxie au fond de l’eau de Buster Keaton ; il n’y a là absolument rien, absolument rien de burlesque ! (cours 18 du 11/05/1982)

Et c’est ça l’opération très bizarre de Keaton. Je prends l’exemple le plus célèbre pour faire comprendre ce que je veux dire : "la Croisière du navigateur". La croisière du navigateur, voilà qu’il se trouve avec la femme, avec une femme, avec une jeune fille, voilà qu’il se trouve dans l’immense bateau vide. Je dirais cet immense bateau vide avec les images qui nous montrent les cuisines de ce bateau qui vont supporter des milliers de personnes. Bon... C’est de la "grande forme" ça. Et l’opération de Keaton, vous ne trouverez jamais ça chez Charlot à mon avis, euh... jamais. C’est tout autre problème, c’est le problème Keatonien. Ça va être quoi ? Ça va être monter des machines idéalement infinies pour adapter les grandes machines à un usage privé réduit à deux. Vous voyez tout un système pour arriver à, comment dans une cuve conçus pour mille personnes, comment arriver à faire cuire un œuf à la coque ! Il va falloir tout un système de, de ....c’est la grande machine Dada. C’est la grande machine Dada ! C’est une machine à la fois récurrente, à récurrence, et à récurrence proprement finie. C’est une machine faite de parties hétérogènes, complètement hétérogènes, comme dans les dessins de Goldberg. Si vous préférez, il y aurait un équivalent aujourd’hui dans les machines, les célèbres machines de Tingueli. Les machines Tingueli, c’est des machines du mêmes type. Et alors, ça il me semble que ce sera sa manière à lui, pour intégrer, pour que les grandes scènes, les grandes formes, dont il nous donne des images fantastiques, merveilleuses, soient intégrées dans le burlesque lui-même. Et là, il y a quelque chose il me semble d’unique. Je prends l’exemple de La croisière du Navigateur : Bon, il est complètement asphyxié dans le fond, là, ivresse sous-marine, asphyxie... On a confiance, alors on est déjà tout prêt à rire mais l’image, elle est pas drôle du tout. (cours 18 du 11/05/1982)

Une des plus grands artistes de machines désirantes, Buster Keaton, a su poser le problème d’une adaptation de machine de masse à des fins individuelles, de couple ou de petit groupe, dans la Croisière du Navigator où les deux héros « doivent affronter un équipement ménager généralement utilisé par des centaines de personnes (la cambuse est une forêt de leviers, de poulies et de fils) » [ft.12] [Deleuze & Guattari : 479-480]

In The Navigator the machine is not merely the great liner by itself: it is the liner apprehended in a 'minoring' function, in which each of its elements, designed for hundreds of people, comes to be adapted to a single destitute couple. The limit, the limit-image is thus the object of a series which does not set out to breach it, or even to reach it, but to attract it, to polarise it. By which system can a little egg be cooked in a huge pot? In Keaton, the machine is not defined by immensity. It implies immensity, but in inventing the 'minoring' function which transforms it, by virtue of an ingenious system which is itself machinic, based on the mass of pulleys, wires and levers. Dans « La croisière du Navigator », la machine, ce n’est pas seulement le grand paquebot par lui-même : c’est le paquebot pris dans une fonction minorante où chacun de ses éléments, destiné à des centaines de personnes, va être adapté à un couple tout seul et démuni. La limite, l’image-limite, est donc l’objet d’une série qui se propose non pas de la franchir ou même de l’atteindre, mais de l’attirer, de la polariser. Par quel système faire cuire un petit œuf dans la marmite énorme ? Chez Keaton, la machine ne se définit pas par l’immense, elle implique l’immense, mais en inventant la fonction minorante qui le transforme, grâce à un système ingénieux lui-même machinique prélevé sur la masse des poulies, des fils et des leviers.[Deleuze Cinéma 1, 1985: 240c.d]

Et c’est ça l’opération très bizarre de Keaton. Je prends l’exemple le plus célèbre pour faire comprendre ce que je veux dire : "la Croisière du navigateur". La croisière du navigateur, voilà qu’il se trouve avec la femme, avec une femme, avec une jeune fille, voilà qu’il se trouve dans l’immense bateau vide. Je dirais cet immense bateau vide avec les images qui nous montrent les cuisines de ce bateau qui vont supporter des milliers de personnes. Bon... C’est de la "grande forme" ça. Et l’opération de Keaton, vous ne trouverez jamais ça chez Charlot à mon avis, euh... jamais. C’est tout autre problème, c’est le problème Keatonien. Ça va être quoi ? Ça va être monter des machines idéalement infinies pour adapter les grandes machines à un usage privé réduit à deux. Vous voyez tout un système pour arriver à, comment dans une cuve conçus pour mille personnes, comment arriver à faire cuire un œuf à la coque ! Il va falloir tout un système de, de ....c’est la grande machine Dada. C’est la grande machine Dada ! C’est une machine à la fois récurrente, à récurrence, et à récurrence proprement finie. C’est une machine faite de parties hétérogènes, complètement hétérogènes, comme dans les dessins de Goldberg. Si vous préférez, il y aurait un équivalent aujourd’hui dans les machines, les célèbres machines de Tingueli. Les machines Tingueli, c’est des machines du mêmes type. Et alors, ça il me semble que ce sera sa manière à lui, pour intégrer, pour que les grandes scènes, les grandes formes, dont il nous donne des images fantastiques, merveilleuses, soient intégrées dans le burlesque lui-même. Et là, il y a quelque chose il me semble d’unique. Je prends l’exemple de La croisière du Navigateur : Bon, il est complètement asphyxié dans le fond, là, ivresse sous-marine, asphyxie... On a confiance, alors on est déjà tout prêt à rire mais l’image, elle est pas drôle du tout. (cours 18 du 11/05/1982)

At the same time, a type of images which are unexpected in the burlesque rise up before our very eyes. For example, the opening sequence of Our Hospitality, with the night, the thunderstorm, the lightning, the double murder and the terrified woman: pure Griffith. Also the cyclone in Steamboat Bill Junior, the diver's suffocation at the bottom of the sea in The Navigator, the crushing of the train and the flood in The General, the terrible boxing match in Battling Butler. Occasionally it is, in particular, an element of the image: the sabre-blade about to be thrust into an enemy's back, in The General, or the knife which the The Cameraman slips into the hand of a Chinese demonstrator. Take, for example, the boxing match, since all burlesques have used this theme. […] in Battling Butler there are three contests: a match which appears to be genuine, perceived in all its violence; a training session, treated in a traditional burlesque fashion, with Keaton like an excited child leaping around, then being threatened by the father-trainer; then finally the settling of scores between Keaton and the champion in all its ugliness: the bodies tossed about, the distortion and crumpling of flesh under the blows, the hatred which appears on their faces. En même temps, sous nos propres yeux, naissent un type d’images inattendues dans le burlesque. C’est l’ouverture des « Lois de l’hospitalité » avec la nuit, l’orage, les éclairs, le double meurtre et la femme terrifiée, du pur Griffith. C’est aussi le cyclone de « Steamboat Bill Junior », l’asphyxie du scaphandrier au fond de la mer dans « La croisière du Navigator », l’écrasement du train et l’inondation dans « Le mécano de la General », le terrible combat de boxe de « Battling Butler ». Parfois, c’est particulièrement un élément de l’image : la lame du sabre qui vient s’enfoncer dans le dos d’un ennemi, dans « Le mécano de la General », ou bien le couteau que « Le caméraman » glisse dans la main d’un manifestant chinois. Soit l’exemple du match de boxe, puisque tous les burlesques sont passés par ce thème. Les matchs de Charlot répondent bien à la loi de la petite différence : match-ballet ou match-|ménage. Mais, dans « Battling Butler », il ya trois combats : un match qui semble vrai, aperçu dans sa violence ; une séance d’entraînement, traitée de façon burlesque traditionnelle, Keaton étant comme un enfant chatouillé qui sursaute, puis menacé par le père-entraîneur ; enfin, le règlement de comptes entre Keaton et le champion, dans toute sa hideur, avec le corps qui tressaute, la distorsion et le froissement de la peau sous les coupes, la haine qui apparaît sur le visage. In Mankiewicz, the flashback always reveals its raison d'être in these angled accounts which shatter causality and, instead of dispersing the enigma, refer it back to still ever deeper ones. Chabrol will rediscover this power and use of the flashback in Violette Nozière, when he wants to indicate the heroine's continual forks, the variety of her faces, the irreducible diversity of the hypotheses (did she or did she not want to spare her mother, etc?) Toujours chez Mankiewicz, le flash-back découvre sa raison d’être dans ces récits coudés qui brisent la causalité et, au lieu de dissiper l’énigme, la renvoient à d’autres énigmes encore plus profondes. Chabrol retrouvera cette force et cet usage du flash-back dans « Violette Nozière », quand il voudra marquer les bifurcations constantes de l’héroïne, la variété de ses visages, l’irréductible diversité des hypothèses (voulait-elle ou non épargner sa mère, etc. ?) [Violette is only a teen, but she works as a prostitute. She falls in love with a man whom she supports by stealing from her parents and by selling herself. This man gives her syphilis. To cover for herself, she convinces her parents that she inherited it from them. She slowly feeds them poison, telling them that the doctor has prescribed a medicine for their sickness.

In this clip we will see at first a couple of flashbacks where there is a forking in her behavior and in the plot direction. So in these cases there is a moment of her acting deceptively or erratically that changes the course of the story. These forks mark themselves with the character of the past even while they are happening. It is very similar to what we saw in Mankiewicz, where the forks are memorable even as they happen, and thus they are like flashbacks in advance [See especially these entries on Barefoot Contessa, All About Eve, (also this one), A Letter to Three Wives, and Suddenly Last Summer]. So for example she sleeps with a man with syphilis, which is a fork in her behavior, and because it has far-reaching consequences, it is a fork in the story. That is what we see in the first flashback below.

Later we see how she ends up killing her father and nearly killing her mother. She explains to the authorities that she did not intend to kill her mother. But she did want to kill her father, she claims, because he molested her when she was younger. We see flashbacks which then make this explanation seem plausible. For example, we learn in one flashback that she remains silent when making love.]
